Grand Palais Éphémère
The Grand Palais Éphémère is a temporary event hall on the Champ de Mars in Paris. The building was constructed in 2021 according to the plans of architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte by the event group GL Events on behalf of the Réunion des musées nationaux et du Grand Palais des Champs-Élysées and the Organizing Committee for the 2024 Summer Olympics. Initially, the building will replace the Grand Palais, which is closed for renovation work, and will be designated as one of the venues for the Olympic Games in Paris under the name Arena Champ-de-Mars. The building will then be dismantled.
Architecture
The plans for the Grand Palais Éphémère were drawn up by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte. When planning the temporary structure, which is reminiscent of the transept of a church, he paid particular attention to the overall surroundings. The load-bearing structure of the glulam vault was made from spruce wood, which is encased in a translucent ETFE membrane.
It is 145 meters long, 140 meters wide, up to 20 meters high and covers an area of 10,000 m². This makes it significantly lower than the dome of the École militaire opposite it, which is reflected in the arched glass façade of the entrance on Place Joffre. The two arched entrances in the middle of the building are reminiscent of the arch motif of the base of the Eiffel Tower, which is located at the other end of the Champ de Mars.
Its alignment corresponds to that of the Eiffel Tower and thus blends harmoniously into the surroundings without being obtrusive or overshadowing the architecture of the École Militaire or the Eiffel Tower. The quick assembly on site was a decisive factor in the choice of timber construction. The site of the Grand Palais Éphémère was chosen by the City of Paris. As the building was to blend harmoniously into its surroundings, the basic structure was also quickly decided. The decision for the material was made just as quickly.
Events
The Grand Palais Éphémère now regularly hosts events that were previously held in the traditional Grand Palais. These include the Paris Photo trade fair, the annual Saut Hermès horse show and Chanel′s biannual fashion shows as part of Paris Fashion Week. Various art exhibitions, conferences and gala dinners are also held here. In 2022, the Wood Construction Forum, one of the most important events in the wood construction industry, was also held here.
